And Arteta is ready to hand the 51-year-old a route back into the game as part of his Gunners revolution.

Bergkamp spent 11 years at Arsenal and has his own statue outside the Emirates. He was a regular in the ‘Invincibles’ squad that went a season unbeaten under the guidance of Arsene Wenger.

He won three Premier League titles and three FA Cups in his time in north London.

Ljungberg, who was a team-mate of Bergkamp’s, revealed on Saturday that he was leaving his role as first-team assistant in pursuit of management opportunities.

‘I have decided to leave my first team assistant coaching role at Arsenal to progress my management experience,’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘I have been involved with this club on and off since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a coach.
