Fernando Alonso reveals what ended Indy 500 dream as F1 legend's Triple Crown wait goes on

This was Alonso’s second unsuccessful attempt at winning the Indy 500 and he failed to qualify for last year’s race.

The 39-year-old is due to return to F1 in 2021 after agreeing a deal with Renault to replace the departing Daniel Ricciardo.

Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul revealed earlier this month that Alonso will be banned from competing in the Indy 500 while driving for them.

“The very straightforward answer is that I’m hardly breathing until next weekend actually, when he is stepping out of his racing car from Indianapolis,” said Abiteboul, when asked about Alonso ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

“But I can be very clear that once he is with us, that is for good, and for a while, so no distractions.”
