Chris Silverwood has called on his players to put in one last effort in the lockdown Test summer as England go in search of the eight wickets they need to complete a 2-0 win over Pakistan – and Jimmy Anderson strives for his 600th.

‘I’m very proud of the way the boys have handled things after being locked up for 10 weeks in their hotel,’ said the England coach.

‘Their attitude and effort have been fantastic. And to see Jimmy getting his 600th wicket would be amazing. Let’s go out there and give it a good go.’

Anderson would already have ticked off the landmark if his team-mates hadn’t dropped four catches off him in 37 balls spread across the third evening and fourth morning, and Silverwood admitted: ‘It was gloomy on Sunday night, but that’s still not an excuse. Jos’s chance wobbled horribly when it got to him.’

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope will undergo a scan on his left shoulder after injuring it in the field in the second over of the day.

He had an operation on the same joint back in April 2019 after dislocating it while playing for Surrey, and did not return to action until August.
