Suicide Squad smashes August box office record with mega $135m haul… stealing top spot from Jason Bourne

It seems everyone loves a baddie – despite what the critics say.

DC’s star-studded Suicide Squad debuted at No. 1 at the box office earning a mega $135.1 million, smashing the record for the biggest August take previously held by Guardians Of The Galaxy’s $94.3 million in 2014, according to Box Office Mojo.

The movie stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and more as the group of comic book baddies roped in for a deadly black ops mission that could wipe the slate clean for them if they succeed.

And succeed they did, also raking in $132 million overseas for a $276.1 million total, earning back the CGI-heavy film’s pricy $175 million budget.

The achievement is even more amazing given that the movie was widely panned by critics, according to Variety.

It cited The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern, who called the film ‘…an all-out attack on the whole idea of entertainment,’ while New York’s David Edelstein branded it ‘the worst of the worst,’ and MTV’s Amy Nicholson dismissed the picture as ‘two hours of padding.’
