Driving laws and Highway Code may be updated if Dutch roundabouts ‘become common’ in UK

Driving rules could be updated to ensure drivers are taught “how to navigate” the new systems to ensure safety standards. Mark Jackson, Chartered Legal Executive at Lime Solicitors said he was sure road users would become familiar with the new system.

The new scheme has been developed after a government review aimed to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

Changes to the Highway Code will see a new hierarchy system put into place which will firm up rights for pedestrians.

The new rules will also introduce better protection for cyclists with drivers set to be issued fines for cutting across those using a bike.

Despite his reservations, Mr Jackson has welcomed the project’s stance to help protect cyclists on UK roads.

He reveals that cyclists with separate paths would help keep all road users separate from each other and would further boost road safety.

He told Express.co.uk: “Ideally, cyclists should be provided with their own paths, as pedestrians are, to keep vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians all separate from each other.

“This will ensure the maximum amount of safety for all road users.

“But in areas where the space is not available for that, then mechanisms such as these Dutch roundabouts which help give priority to cyclists and give clear lines of segregation from other traffic, will certainly help.”

Speaking at the official opening, councillor Ian Bates said: “I am delighted to see the completion of improvements to this roundabout, which aim to improve safety at this busy junction and encourage more people to walk and cycle.

“It is great to see Cambridgeshire leading the way in implementing the first truly Dutch inspired roundabout that improves safety for vulnerable users, ahead of recent nationally published Government guidance that strongly promotes this type of infrastructure.”
