  • Police tweeted they ‘engaged’ the shooter and the suspect was dead at 12.50pm 

A man is dead following a shootout with California police at a gas station Friday. 

The San Luis Obispo Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at a Vons gas station in Nipomo, California at about 11.40am. 

Scanner traffic indicated that at least two Vons employees were locked inside an office at the gas station, The Tribune reported.

Witnesses told KSBY the shooter had fired between seven-to-eight shots after an altercation at the gas station. 

At about noon, authorities arrested a woman, who was believed to have been with the shooter, but was reported to have fled the scene. 

Police notified the public that the shooter was dead at 12.50pm. 

The San Luis Obispo Police Department tweeted that deputies and officers from California Highway Patrol ‘engaged the active shooter and the suspect is deceased.’

Police added that there was ‘no known threat to public safety’ and were determining if anyone was injured at the scene.
