Stacey Solomon: Loose Women star's blunt comeback to 'stupid, dumb and not smart' claim

Stacey Solomon, 30, first found fame through her powerful vocal talents on ‘The X Factor’ back in 2009. She then went on to be crowned ‘Queen of the Jungle’ in ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ after she gained more than 80 percent of the public’s vote. Recently, she serves on the ‘Loose Women’ panel, where she discusses a number of topical and newsworthy events. During one candid discussion on the ITV show, she confessed that online insults about her intelligence had rekindled her insecurities but in a moment of defiance she refused to back down.

Solomon admitted that backlash from the public over her decision to pull children Zachary and Leighton out of mainstream schools had “struck a chord”.

Instagram and Twitter comments tapped into her long-held insecurities about the public’s perception of her Essex accent and bubbly personality.

While she claimed to normally be unaffected by social media trolls in 2018, insults about her being incapable of giving her children an education hurt her.

The TV star said: “It’s always interesting to hear people’s response – pro and against the decision – that you make…but there was one consensus that I really didn’t enjoy reading.

“There were a lot of people who were saying things like ‘Oh Stacey, you’re so stupid and dumb, how could you teach your children?’ And that I don’t even know how to spell my own name, let alone teach a child.

“As much as I shouldn’t take any notice because these people are sad in their own lives and that’s why they are doing what they are doing, I think it really struck a chord with me.

“I feel like for a long time in my life, even from being a child, I felt that I come across as dumb because of my accent and my personality and I’ve always been treated that way.”

Solomon, who boasts 13 GCSEs, was interrupted by co-star Nadia Sawalha who said: “You know what? You don’t have to think like that any longer.

“You are super smart, you are witty, you are informed and you are a great Loose Woman so, you know what, chuck that label away and never think of it again!”

Applause filled the ITV studio, as Solomon gushed: “Yeah, you’re right. I love you.”

Co-host Christine Lampard also lambasted online abusers and branded the situation “so ridiculous”.

She added: “It’s like, I don’t know you, and I have no warrant to have an opinion but I’m still going to tell you. I can’t believe people pick their phones up to be horrible!”

The discussion followed a column she wrote in Fabulous magazine about her choice to teach her sons at home because her eldest had “lost interest” in mainstream schooling.

Solomon said that her decision to withdraw her children was not “made lightly” and she had been “pondering it for a few years”.

She added: “Yes, it’s controversial and not everyone will agree with me but parents have to make their own decisions. No-one should judge them and you shouldn’t feel judged.”

While on the panel, she concluded: “There were a few comments after I said I was home-schooling the boys about how dumb I am and how dumb they would turn out.

“I already have an insecurity which is people saying that I am really thick… all my life, even before X Factor, people have always thought I was stupid and dumb and not smart.”

But the star stood defiantly against the social media trolls when she stated: “I have never said I was dumb and that is what people assume I am.

“It did really make me feel bad but I don’t know these trolls, they are insignificant and you have to talk yourself out of it.”
