Borussia Dortmund chief makes Jadon Sancho transfer statement as Man Utd monitor star

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke addressed the media this afternoon as the club’s accounts showed his side posted losses of £45million for the 2019/20 season. The Bundesliga side could make that money back through selling Jadon Sancho but Watzke insists his side are in a stable condition.

Manchester United have been trying to sign Sancho but failed to meet Dortmund’s £108million price tag and their August 10 deadline.

The England international has since jetted to Switzerland for the club’s pre-season training camp.

Watzke says the 20-year-old will not be sold this summer and discussed the speculation once more.

Dortmund presented their accounts to the press which showed they made a substantial loss because of how the coronavirus pandemic affected their revenue streams.

But Watzke insists that the German club are in a very strong position and are under no pressure to sell.

“We have had ten very, very good years at Borussia Dortmund,” he said.

“We made three-digit million profits and wrote deep black numbers. Then corona came and everything changed a little.

“We have succeeded in generating such a high level of liquidity that we can withstand this pandemic for a very long time.”

When asked directly about whether the club needs to sell Sancho, Watzke replied: “We weren’t in a situation where we had to sell at any cost.”

Dortmund’s stars agreed to waive part of their salaries in March to help ease the financial burden on the club.

The agreement will last until the end of the calendar year – unless supporters can return to the Westfalenstadion in their numbers.

“The team agreed to an agreement in March that it is valid until December 31st. Unless we can play with the maximum number of spectators,” Watzke explained.

“The later we see spectators and the later we come to a sold-out house, the worse the result will be.

“That would not threaten our existence, but it is not what we want.

“Football is extremely difficult to imagine without fans. For so long we have to persevere if it doesn’t go on for years.”
