The fourth season of Rick and Morty wrapped up in May and delivered an incredibly satisfying season finale. Before the popular animated show returns to Netflix and Adult Swim, some viewers have suggested a new theory which could once again shatter everything fans thought they knew about the series.
In the final moments of Star Mort: Rickturn of the Jerri, an earth-shattering twist revealed Rick (played by Justin Roiland) no longer knows the true identity of his daughter.
After Beth (Sarah Chalke) may or may not have decided to clone herself in season three, fans finally discovered Rick went through with the procedure and shuffled the two Beths until he couldn’t tell which was which.
Now, one Beth remains on Earth with the Smith family while the other has taken to the stars as an intergalactic freedom fighter.
The devastating twist left viewers scratching their heads, with some fans still trying to work out if it’s possible to prove which Beth is, in fact, a clone of the original.

However, a new theory has proposed an even darker twist will eventually follow.
One perceptive viewer took to Reddit when they realised it could be possible both Beths in the season finale were actually clones.
Redditor dsno1369 posted: “Season three episode one, when we flashback to the ‘totally fabricated origin story’ we see Rick’s wife and Beth killed when a bomb is dropped out of a portal by a Rick.”
As well as establishing Rick’s love for McDonald’s Szechuan sauce, The Rickshank Rickdemption opens season three with a series of fake memories during an intense interrogation session.
If showrunners Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon eventually decide to explore this shadier side of Rick’s past, it could be revealed Beth has been a clone this whole time.
Finally, they went on: “The result of this would mean both Beth and space Beth are clones which would explain why Rick was okay with not knowing which one was which.
“In addition this would also explain Rick’s hatred for other Ricks and specifically the Council of Ricks.”
Rick still hasn’t thoroughly explained his deep-seated hatred for the galactic authority comprising different versions of himself from other dimensions.
Moreover, this theory would confirm why Rick was still hung up about not knowing the identity of his true daughter at the end of the episode.
The fan explained: “Since he would have spent years being a father figure to Clone Beth 1.0 I’m sure he felt his version of fatherly love regardless of if she was a clone or not.”
Roiland and Harmon are hard at work on the 60 new episodes of Rick and Morty for Adult Swim, so fans will have to wait and see if any new information about Rick’s past eventually comes to light.
