MARK CLATTENBURG: It was the RIGHT call to allow Lyon’s second goal in Champions League quarter-final victory over Manchester City

  • VAR made correct decision to award Lyon’s secoond goal against Man City
  • Moussa Dembele made minimal and accidental contact with Aymeric Laporte
  • In my opinion, Dembele did little wrong as it was Laporte who changed direction

It was right that Lyon’s all-important second goal wasn’t ruled out by VAR. This was a subjective call and one which had to stay on the pitch.

We’ve all rewatched it in super slow-mo to see whether Moussa Dembele tripped Aymeric Laporte in the build-up.

But the contact appears minimal and is accidental because the defender cuts across the attacker.

He changes his direction, whereas Dembele doesn’t, and Laporte goes to ground.

Did the Lyon forward do anything wrong? No. Was Laporte the one who ran into his path? Yes. Therefore it was right that it was left to the referee to decide and his decision was no foul.

Had he ruled out the goal and City gone on to win, there would have been real complaints from Lyon.
