James Whale: 'I'm strong' Radio star fighting cancer of the brain, spine, kidney and lungs

talkRADIO broadcaster James Whale, 69, has revealed he is fighting cancer of his brain, spine, kidney and lungs after he was diagnosed two weeks ago. The radio presenter who now hosts alongside Ash Gould has detailed his diagnosis after he considered “booking a trip” to Dignitas.

James’ devastating diagnosis comes two years after his wife Belinda died of lung cancer.

The radio legend also had one of his kidneys removed after discovering a tumour 20 years ago.

“This little b*****d has spread,” he began.

“It’s in my remaining kidney. I’ve got a couple of small lesions in my lungs.

Recalling his haematologist’s words, the star revealed: “The woman looked worried and she said ‘I’m so sorry. I’ve got really, really bad news for you. I’m afraid 20 years ago you had kidney cancer. Well, it looks like it’s probably come back. You’ve got a tumour on your kidney.’”

James went on to say: “And I thought, ‘OK, well, 20 years later I’ll have to do it all over again.’

“And then she said, ‘I’m sorry. Sadly it’s spread. You’ve got small lesions in your brain and your lung, in your spine, in your pituitary gland.’”

The radio host then opened up about his initial reaction was to look into euthanasia at Dignitas – the Swiss organisation which provides assisted and accompanied suicide.

“I came home, had a little think about things. I decided I’m just booking myself a trip to Dignitas. You might as well just go and get it over with,” he admitted.

However, James hopes to return to presenting by taking pills, meaning he can avoid chemotherapy.

Fans have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts over James’ news tonight.

One tweeted: “Keep fighting James. The mic is ready when you are…”
