Max Verstappen backs 'party mode' ban as Mercedes outshine Red Bull at Spanish Grand Prix

“But I think today the car was performing quite okay. Over one lap we are clearly lacking to Mercedes. But overall I think it was a positive day. Especially on the long runs the car felt really nice to drive. So that’s quite important.”

Verstappen said Mercedes will be too fast to keep up with on Saturday but didn’t rule out taking the fight to them in the race itself.

“Qualifying, I don’t think so,” said Verstappen, when asked if he could pull off another shock on Saturday. “Mercedes is really fast. But who knows in the race? I felt quite good today. Let’s see on Sunday if it’s going to be the same.”

Verstappen sits second in the drivers’ standings ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, with Hamilton in first and Bottas in third.
