‘It is very messy, in any case a very messy period in terms of transfers,’ he told Fox Sports. ‘Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud to be there.

‘If there had not been the coronavirus, it might have been different now. There is no clarity now and we have to wait and see how it turns out.’

Van de Beek first emerged as a big transfer target for some of the elite European clubs after a starring role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19 as he scored against Tottenham.

He has been tipped for a move to Old Trafford or the Bernabeu in recent months, with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targeting midfield reinforcements.

But van de Beek says he won’t be pushing for a move away and will be content if he remains at Ajax player for the 2020-21 campaign.

‘I’m still here and after all these years I still have a lot of fun,’ he said. ‘If I also play at Ajax next season, I still have a lot of fun. You won’t hear me complaining.’

Van de Beek is a product of the club’s famed academy, coming through alongside stars like Matthijs de Ligt, who has since left for Juventus, and Frenkie de Jong, who joined Barcelona.

He has racked up a total of 175 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 41 times and winning the Eredivisie title and Dutch Cup in 2018-19.

Ajax were favourites to win the title again in 2019-20 before league officials opted to declare the season null and void in the wake of the pandemic.
