Ted Lasso release date: How many episodes are there? Jason Sudeikis previews new comedy

Ted Lasso sees Jason Sudeikis back as a clueless football coach in the brand-new Apple TV+ comedy series. Express.co.uk exclusively spoke to the star of the show to find out everything viewers need to know about the series, from plot details to how many episodes there will be.

How many episodes are in Ted Lasso?

Comedy fans are going to fall in love with the new series all about the world of Premier League football.

The half-hour show sees Sudeikis reprise his role as clueless coach Lasso, who fans will remember from a number of adverts for NBC back in the early 2010s.

The series follows him as he is drafted in by Richmond FC’s boss Rebecca (played by Hannah Waddingham) to coach her team.

With no experience of football – or even a clue what the off-side rule is – he is in for a baptism of fire as he deals with disappointed fans and high-maintenance players.

The first episode of the show will be launched on Apple’s streaming platform on Friday, August 14.

Then the remainder of the episodes will be airing weekly on Fridays for fans to enjoy.

In total, there will be 10 episodes of the star-studded comedy to watch on the platform.

Express.co.uk recently exclusively spoke to the star and co-creator of the show to find out what to expect from the series and how it came about.

Sudeikis explained: “Me and two buddies – Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly – created these commercials for NBC back in 2013.

“I felt that the character was really fun to write, really fun to play and the character element we discovered in doing the second [commercial] was his optimism, his hopefulness, his playfulness.

“And it was like, ‘Oh there’s more depth to this.’ So it just sort of ruminated for a couple of years.

“Then the three of us sat down to be do a pilot, six to 10 episode season arc and it flowed really well. We got a lot worked on in a week which is very telling.”

After laying out the plans, the show only found its feet after Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence approached Sudeikis about working together.

He added: “I can only think an idea of mine is so good but I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by people who are higher up the mountain my entire career.

“When someone who has done a bunch and knows a bunch looks at you and says, ‘Oh that’s good – go with that.’

“Whether that’s Lorne Michaels or Tina Fey or in this instance Bill Lawrence, when someone that had made a lot of stuff with a whole career and résumé behind them, then they’re the wings beneath the wings so to speak.”

When the ball was rolling on the comedy series, Sudeikis rounded up an all-star cast, including a lot of recognisable faces for fans of British comedy.

This included actors like Nick Mohammed, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift and Juno Temple.

Sudiekis added how it was important for him to cast some British talent when approaching the show.

He continued: “That was a big thing for us. We didn’t want to do a version where we film it all here in the States and then we go shoot for two weeks in London.

“I’m not a good enough actor, it’s nice to be living the actual experience for me.

“It allowed us to have a very fun, diverse, pretty much all Brit crew and diverse cast – and to be able to pull in day players for small parts here and there from an incredible pool of talent.

“Everybody was lovely – I ate a lot of fish and chips, I drank a lot of pints, I even drank tea!”

Ted Lasso will be on Apple TV+ from 14th August with new episodes debuting weekly on Fridays on the streaming service.
