Holby City spoilers: Ric Griffin could have been saved as fans spot huge plot hole

Guy Self (played by John Michie) got lucky last week when he resigned after a heated row with Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie). But when Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel) told him he was too good to leave, he stormed right back into the hospital only to find Ric had been rushed into emergency surgery. As CEO Max McGerry (Jo Martin) left him on the table to take on another case though, Guy was left to perform the operation despite being drunk.

Guy was a bottle deep last night as he approached Ric on the operating table.

As he stood staring at his enemy waiting to go under, he was approached by Louis McGerry (Tyler Luke Cunningham).

Louis told Guy they hadn’t been able to get started yet, which immediately sparked the neurosurgeon’s curiosity, and he asked why not.

Louis replied: “Max had to take another case,” but, unsure why Guy was there, the medic probed: “Are you the on-call surgeon? It’s just I thought you were suspended.”

Guy reassured him that was all over and done with and they decided it was time to scrub in and get to work.

The further Guy got into the operation though, the more suspicions he raised.

Not only was he not allowed in the hospital to work after throwing his badge at the board last week, but he had also finished a bottle of vodka before doing so.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to discuss how he got to the point of operating and why no one could tell Guy was drunk.

However, the more suspicious Louis got, the more Guy lost his temper.

Donna Jackson (Jaye Jacobs) stepped in only to be horrified to see who was operating, realising Ric could be in danger.

Now all viewers want to know is whether Ric will live or die, and whether Louis not noticing Guy was drunk will come back to bite him.

If Ric dies it will come down to either Guy or Max, but has Guy done more harm than good? And will Ric pull through?

However, with Guy and Ric at each other’s necks before he was rushed into the operation, if Ric were to survive Guy could use this against him.

Guy doesn’t want to leave Holby, but he also doesn’t want Ric breathing down his neck. If Ric survives, he will have no choice but to thank Guy for his life.

Fans will have to wait to see if Ric lives or dies though as last night’s episode was the last one for a while, as the show runs out of episodes.

Holby City is available to catch up on BBC iPlayer now.
