Guy Verhofstadt sparks fury over US election tweet 'None of your business!'

The MEP took to Twitter to show his support for US President Donald Trump’s rival. He said: “A win for @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris would be a great start for new transatlantic relations but by no means the end of it: EU needs to step up on defence, foreign policy, tax + plan for recovery and trade so both sides see benefits. Don’t just root for them – make it happen!”

But the tweet prompted an angry reaction from some Twitter users who accused him of interfering in the US election.

One commented: “Not really any of your business Guy. It’s for the American people to decide.”

Another compared Mr Verhofstadt’s intervention to Brexit, saying: “Trump will win.

“And I’ll laugh my head off at your angsty hand-wringing just like I did in 2016.”

A third wrote: “Interference again Guy? Remind us again how that worked out last time.”

Another fumed: “Butt out of the US election it’s none of your business!”

A fifth commented: “Your answer to every problem is always more EU.”

Another said: “With you supporting them, they’re toast. Thankfully.”

Former vice-president Mr Biden said he was “proud” to have Ms Harris as his running mate.

Ms Harris added in a Twitter post: “@JoeBiden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us.

“And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.

“I’m honoured to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”

But Mr Trump branded Ms Harris “the kind of opponent everyone dreams of”.

The US President tweeted: “@KamalaHarris started strong in the Democrat Primaries, and finished weak, ultimately fleeing the race with almost zero support.

“That’s the kind of opponent everyone dreams of!”

Americans go to the polls on November 3.
