Android users might want to switch to iPhone after hearing this news

If you want the best price when you come to sell your ageing smartphone, there’s one very clear winner. According to the latest data-crunching, Apple gadgets hold their value much, much better than their Android counterparts. Recent statistics from CompareMyMobile have demonstrated just how much better the iPhone really is when it comes to trading-in an old handset.

Trade-in comparison site CompareMyMobile recently checked out a number of phones to work out how much value they hold just a few months after launch. Coming out on top was the £729 iPhone 11, which is still worth around £521 almost one year after it launched worldwide – that’s a drop of just 28.5 percent.

Surprisingly, the next best manufacturer, according to CompareMyMobile, was OnePlus with its OnePlus 8 losing around 30 percent of its value. Meanwhile, Samsung came in third with its Galaxy S20+ dropping from £999 to £591 – a fall of 40 percent since this flagship phone launched back in March.

But if you thought that’s bad, spare a thought for Huawei and Sony Xperia owners. The P40 Pro has plummeted by over 55 percent and the Xperia 1 by a whopping 80 percent – ouch!

That means if you bought the £849 Xperia 1 when it launched last year it’s now likely to be worth just £160 when you attempt to trade it in.

Here’s how the new phone brands compare according to the latest figures from CompareMyMobile –

APPLE – Average phone price £885 • Average deprecation 48.25%

ONEPLUS – Average phone price £602 • Average deprecation 51.51%

SAMSUNG – Average phone price £884 • Average deprecation 57.21%

HUAWEI – Average phone price £594 • Average deprecation 71.19%

GOOGLE – Average phone price £705 • Average deprecation 76.26%

SONY – Average phone price £737 • Average deprecation 76.41%

So, it still seems that the iPhone is the winner when it comes to trade-in values with OnePlus and Samsung also performing the best out of Android.

Speaking about the research, Rob Ballie from comparemymobile.com said: “Flagship handsets can be eye-wateringly expensive, and if you’re like to majority of people who like to ditch and switch every few years, opting for an out-of-fashion brand could leave you hundreds of pounds worse off.

“Our report found Apple retains value far better than any other brand on the market, despite its rivals slowly closing the gap on flagship costs, making the iPhone the most solid investment on the phone market today. For instance, those who opted for an iPhone 11 (65gb) last year would be nearly twice as better off than those who opted for the comparative Samsung or Huawei models, with handset holding onto 71% of its value compared to just 41% percent from its rivals.

“While the findings are good news for iPhone owners, those looking to upgrade to the new rumoured iPhone 12, should start considering their trade in options now, as the value of their handset will likely dip following the latest release.”
