Matt Le Tissier has announced he is temporarily quitting social media after revealing he has been targeted by ‘cyber bullies’ who have allegedly tried to get him sacked from his role as a pundit on Sky Sports.

The Southampton legend had been outspoken on social media about various subjects including the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In the wake of personal criticism, the retired playmaker released a lengthy statement detailing his position.

Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier has announced he is temporarily quitting Twitter

In a statement published on Twitter, Le Tissier said: ‘A few thoughts before I take a break from social media for a couple of weeks, I’m a bit sad I even have to write this but hey ho.

‘So ever since I became relatively well known in the Southampton area in the late 1980s due to being a footballer I have tried to use my status to do good for people in this area and who are less fortunate than me.

‘I have become a patron/ambassador for numerous charities and have donated many thousands of hours of my own free time to these charities so much so that I was awarded the freedom of the city for my loyalty and dedication to not only Southampton FC, but also the city of Southampton itself.

‘Yes I’ve made mistakes and errors of judgment in the past, which I regret, but I believe the good I’ve done far outweighs the mistakes.

‘I have huge sympathy for anyone who loses someone close to them by whatever health reason, I recently lost my grandad so I know how it feels.

‘You trolls and bots out there who try to belittle me with your snide remarks trying to make out I’m some uncaring individual who has no empathy, you couldn’t be further from the truth and I feel incredible sorry for you that there is so little joy in your life that you resort to this.

‘I truly hope you find happiness soon.’

After making his debut in 1986, Le Tissier went on to play 540 games for Southampton and scored 209 goals before initially retiring in 2002 and famously scoring the last ever goal at The Dell in his final game.

Since leaving the club he has built a successful career as a pundit on Sky Sport’s Soccer Saturday programme.

He added: ‘Thankfully strength of mind and strength of character is something I have in abundance and that’s why I won’t be forced permanently off this platform by cyber bullies.

‘Another group of people who I feel sorry for are the ones that are writing to my employers to try and get me sacked from my job and ruin my life by limiting income streams.

‘My crime in all of this is that I feel the government have overreacted to the danger of Covid-19 (now being referred to as coronavirus again if you haven’t noticed). I’m also not an anti-vaxxer as I’ve been labelled. I believe you should be free to choose what you put into your own body, if this Covid overreaction doesn’t lead to mandatory vaccines then I will happily apologise.

‘I’m now encouraged to see more and more articles questioning the response to this with available facts that are now coming to light.

‘I would just ask people to look beyond the headlines and government propaganda and do some critical thinking of your own, ask yourself who benefits from all of this.

‘Ask if it’s so dangerous why do they need to artificially inflate the numbers? Why do they go from focusing on deaths first and when they decline dramatically do they focus on cases and go door to door to find asymptomatic people who aren’t actually ill, ask does the PCR test that they use specifically test for Covid 19 or will it be a positive test if you’ve had a cold recently?

‘Don’t be afraid to ask questions but also don’t have a closed mind, be open to evidence and facts, but most importantly of all, look after your mental halth, if you see the positive side of everything you’ll be able to live a much happier life than others.

‘See you on the other side.’
