Caroline Flack’s heartbreaking hope laid bare: ‘We’re about love’

After Flack’s death on February 15 this year, many repeated the emotional call for people to take care of, and look out for, one another, which the TV star shared on Instagram in December.

But the presenter didn’t appear to just speak the words but enacted them too – notably while she starred as the lead presenter of ‘Love Island’, a reality show that aimed to matchmake young singles.

Flack said she sympathised with contestants going through relationship struggles on the popular programme, which attracted peak live audiences of more than 3.6million viewers.

Flack once explained some of the ways she tried to help the cast, revealing: “I’m a viewer first, presenter second. But I’m really just a professional viewer.

“I support them, I can’t be a robot when it comes to the show otherwise I wouldn’t be the right person to do it.

“I have to stay impartial but, of course, if you see someone in there and you feel for them, you want to just go in there and say ‘It’s OK, I’m here on your side’.”

While Flack longed to help those with difficulties, she admitted that being a professional made it hard to do that, in comments to the Irish News in 2019.

In previous years, she confessed to having tried to give contestants love advice to help them in their quest – but chose against it in later series’ because she felt she was “not very good” at it.

Flack told RadioTimes in June last year: “On Love Island, you can’t plan anything, you can’t fake anything, you can’t fake being in love, you just can’t.”

She claimed to have been sad to find out that the previous year’s couples didn’t last, but went on to comment that sometimes that is for the best.

Flack added: “Some relationships don’t last forever. It doesn’t mean they’re a failure. Sometimes two people aren’t meant to be forever, only for a little bit.”

The star reiterated that the show would “always be positive” and ultimately about trying to match potential soulmates.

She said: “We’re a show about love. There’s nothing more positive in the world than love. That’s what we create and are aiming for.

“When it starts again this season, that’s what people will remember it’s about, not what happens afterwards. Our show is about love.”
