Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Anthony Martial reaction to LASK winner

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Anthony Martial promised a goal before his winner against LASK. The France international came off the bench to win the game, with his goal coming late on. And the Red Devils manager has opened up on the look the pair exchanged after the last act of the game.

Manchester United went into the game against LASK 5-0 up from the first leg.

But they fell behind at Old Trafford courtesy of a stunning strike from Philipp Wiesinger, whose curling strike soared past Sergio Romero.

United were insipid for the most part but levelled through Jesse Lingard, with the England international scoring his second goal from as many games.

And Martial won the game late on after some good work from Juan Mata.

After his goal, the France international looked up to the stands and smiled at Solskjaer – who was also beaming.

And Solskjaer opened up on that interaction, saying: “We needed to win the game and I couldn’t get all of them on.

“For me it’s a good exercise, job done, good minutes under the belt and ready to travel.”

Lingard opened up on his own goal after the game and refused to criticise Solskjaer for hooking him, despite his disappointment at the time.

He said: “Of course, you take confidence from goals.

“I wanted to add goals this season and hopefully now I can carry on throughout the rest of this competition.

“I was enjoying the game and I enjoy football matches. I felt like I could score more today but obviosuly it’s the manager’s decision and I stand by that.”

“When you’re not in the right mental state football takes your mind away from everything. I love playing football and playing for Manchester United.”

Paul Scholes believes Lingard’s days could be numbered at United, despite his goal against LASK.

“Recently, he’s not been good enough,” he told BT Sport.

“To bring him off after an hour when he definitely won’t start on Monday that was a little sign, and Fred as well, that he [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] might be getting rid of them.

“I know what he’s capable of, but at United he’s just become a squad player. Unless there are a lot of injuries I don’t see Jesse getting a run of games.

“I like Jesse, but I can’t seeing him getting a run of games.”
