During Freddie Mercury’s lifetime, many iconic pictures of the star were taken by official Queen photographer Neal Preston. And now he’s spoke out on perhaps his most iconic. Shared on Instagram, the 1986 snap sees Freddie leaning back during a performance at Wembley Stadium.
Preston said: “The fourth frame I shot during that show has become one of the most well-known rock photos in history.
“It’s a photograph I’m very proud of.
“And like all great photographs it will live forever”
A new book featuring many of the Queen photographer’s unseen snaps of the band is released later this year.

Titled Queen – The Neal Preston Photographs, the book covers Queen tours from 1975 to 1986.
Not just pictures on stage, but backstage, on the road and everything in between.
Both active Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor will be contributing to the exciting new project.
The guitarist and drummer will be providing text, alongside Preston, revealing the stories behind the pictures.
Meanwhile, earlier this year another one of Freddie Mercury’s photographer revealed a tip the Queen singer gave him.
Appearing in YouTube series Finding Freddie, Richard Young said: “Well I just found him very generous and very kind and very lovely.
“Whenever I did anything with Freddie, he always said to me, ‘Try and be on the stage and capture the audience.’
“I always made sure I got 100,000 people in the background of the picture. Each one of them waving or clapping at the same time.”
On one snap taken at Queen’s 1986 Slane Castle concert, Young said: “Freddie always asked me to be on stage, so you get this kind of image.
“He had them in the palm of his hand. He was conducting the whole choir. Freddie didn’t want me at the front of the stage.”
The Queen singer would say to him: “We all know what I look like darling!
“Just make sure you get the 100,000 people.”
