Sunderland have mocked arch rivals Newcastle after the Magpies saw a proposed £300million takeover fall through on Thursday, as the League One club announced the signing of Aiden O’Brien.

Newcastle saw the rumoured takeover of Saudi Arabia’s Private Investment Fund from unpopular owner Mike Ashley fall through on Thursday, after a prolonged period of negotiation.

It leaves the club stuck with Ashley, who has not endeared himself to the club’s passionate fanbase, who had been hoping to see the back of the Sports Direct tycoon.

And Sunderland have taken the opportunity to taunt their local rivals over the collapse of the deal on Thursday.

The Black Cats used the announcement of new signing Aiden O’Brien, after the Millwall striker left The Den on a free transfer, to poke fun at their north eastern nemesis.

‘After a long wait, there’s nothing better than finally getting a deal over the line,’ the League One outfit wrote, before listing: ‘Championship experience. A previous promotion. North-London born. Senior international’.

When listed vertically, the first letter of each of the four items spells ‘cans’, a phrase Newcastle fans have been posting on social media with fans anticipating opening a few beverages once the takeover deal was complete.

Fans of both clubs were able to spot both jibes, and it has lead to widespread debate on the thread.

‘The only deal you’ll be getting is another series on Netflix about life in League One,’ one Newcastle fan said.

‘Oh the irony of your statement about finally getting a deal over the line…. today of all days,’ a Sunderland fan added.
