James Martin: Chef speaks out on decision that angered his mum 'Didn't go down too well'

Saturday Morning chef James Martin, 48, has revealed he invested a lot of money in a car when he was younger, which left his mum feeling annoyed. The star, who boasts an impressive collection of automobiles, reflected on the big purchase, which he made even before he had his own house.

Speaking to Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the Fuelling Around podcast, James got onto the subject of his mum’s reaction when they discussed cars being an “investment”.

Dave told the television personality: “The thing is James, and this perhaps as I say, by your own admission, could be the Yorkshireman in you, is the fact that if you buy the right car, then it’s not like wasting 100 grand or 200 grand.

“Because actually, if you buy the right car and you look after it, these are investments, they’re like works of art, aren’t they?”

However, James explained that although he agreed with Dave’s statement, his mum would have preferred him to get on the property ladder.

He quipped: “Only you or I would say that! You try telling that to your mother.

“Aged 24-years-old, I’m living above a Chinese takeaway and an Indian restaurant, I haven’t got a house and I’ve just spent 175 grand on a Mercedes Benz.

“It didn’t really go down to well, to be honest with you!”

Jason then mimicked James’ mum’s voice, as he said in a Yorkshire accent: “‘Gone to b****y wrack and ruin you have lad, being down south. You’ve got your priorities all wrong!’”

The TV chef also admitted the most expensive car he’s ever bought was £800,000.

He added: “That was the Ferrari, 14 years ago. It’s worth a lot more than that now.”

Elsewhere, James “distracted” Loose Women presenter Andrea McLean with one of his cooking segments on This Morning.

Andrea revealed in an Instagram story: “We are a couple of minutes before going on air, but I’m so distracted by what’s happening on This Morning… look.”
