Manchester City set to land winger Ferran Torres from Valencia for £21m after young Spanish starlet agrees five-year-deal at the Etihad Stadium

  • Manchester City are hoping Ferran Torres can replace Leroy Sane
  • The Spain Under 21 star has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest prospects
  • City have haggled down a fee from £40m as he enters final year of Valencia deal

Manchester City are close to signing Valencia winger Ferran Torres for a fee of around £20.86millon plus bonuses.

City have identified Torres, 20, as a replacement for Leroy Sane and are understood to have agreed personal terms with the Spain Under 21 international over a five-year contract.

The two clubs have yet to agree on a fee but are said to be close. Valencia wanted £40m for Torres and reports in Spain have suggested it would be £27.2m, but it’s understood that the initial fee will be substantially less.

Torres is in the final year of his contract at the Mestalla which has enabled City to sign one of Europe’s most promising young wingers for a relatively modest price. The opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad was said to be one of the reasons behind his decision.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain said earlier this week that the club were ready to move quickly in the transfer window.

‘We have to be ready,’ said Begiristain. ‘It will be a strange window and people have to move fast. We have to bring in players who can improve our squad, but also it means that maybe someone can leave.’

Valencia have an interest in City midfielder Yangel Herrera, who has been on loan at their rivals Granada, but would prefer to keep the two deals separate.

City are also in the market for a centre-back and are waiting to see if Bournemouth’s valuation of Nathan Ake has changed now they have dropped out of the Premier League, having made an initial approach for the 25-year-old Dutchman.

City will look to offload Nicolas Otamendi amid interest in the Argentine from Real Betis, while John Stones’s future at the Etihad is also in doubt.
