Money Heist: Why was Tokyo chosen to join the heist? Tragic backstory revealed

Money Heist fans love the character of Tokyo (played by Úrsula Corberó) who is known for her quick wit, impulsive behaviour, and loyalty to the team. However, some viewers are eager to know a bit more about her past, and how she found herself joining the gang in season one – here’s everything revealed about this.

What is Tokyo’s backstory in Money Heist?

In the past four seasons of Money Heist, viewers have followed Tokyo from being a reluctant recruit to one of the main leaders of the heist.

What’s more, the character not only has a central role but is also the narrator of the entire series.

As a result, many fans are curious to know more about her past and why she was chosen for the gang in the first place.

The first time viewers see her is at the beginning of episode one when she is in hiding after a robbery gone wrong.

Another thing some fans would love to find out is why exactly Tokyo was picked for the heist gang by the Professor (Álvaro Morte).

User carlyleprick also wrote: “Tokyo’s action-oriented when the stakes are high.

“But the show still doesn’t explain how the Professor would know that about her, from her string of past robberies, so that can’t be the reason why she was picked. Hopefully part five addresses this.”

There is also a possibility viewers will be able to see more of her backstory in a potential spin-off of the show.

This is because series creator Álex Pina has also teased the possibility of spin-offs of the Spanish series.

Speaking to Oprah Magazine earlier this year, he said: “We do have many possibilities for some spin-offs, yes, and I think that’s thanks to the strong and powerful identities of the characters.

“We’ve always looked for characters to have a very complex, layered design.

“So I think almost every character of Money Heist has a duality that we would like to see in a spinoff. We could watch any of them in other contexts.”

He also added about who he would like to see: “From Nairobi to El Profesor…

“Denver is yet another character with his own charm. I would love to write all of them as spinoffs!”

Therefore, viewers will just have to wait and see whether any more is revealed about Tokyo’s past as the show continues.

Money Heist seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix now.
