Lewis Hamilton hailed as former Mercedes boss gives Michael Schumacher F1 records verdict

The win put him within five of matching Schumacher’s record of 91 victories and it left Haug in awe of the Mercedes talisman.

“Lewis is absolutely ‘at his best’,” Haug said. “If you see the starting phase in such a difficult race with changing conditions and the track is still damp, you can see his class. After three laps he was ahead by eight seconds, which is phenomenal.

“He is well on the way to overtaking and surpassing Michael Schumacher’s records. And then deservedly so, of course. He was a Mercedes apprentice and has now become a great master, and this multiple times.”

Hamilton will return to Silverstone this weekend as he goes in search of a seventh career victory at the British Grand Prix.

The race is the fourth of a revamped 2020 schedule which was extended to 13 rounds last week following the additions of Grands Prix at the Nurburgring, Portimao and Imola.
