Florida reports terrifying surge in deadly coronavirus cases – US second wave fears erupt

The US has the highest infection and death rate across the globe after surpassing four million cases and 149,414 deaths. Several states have been forced back into lockdown as cases continue to rise.

Over the last 24 hours, Florida has become the second state after California to over New York, which was the worst-hit state at the start of the pandemic.

According to a Reuters tally, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Sunshine State rose by a staggering 9,300 to 423,855.

Florida is now the second worst-hit state across the US after overtaking New York with 415,827 cases.

California still continues to lead with 448,497 reported cases.

New York still has recorded the most deaths of any US state at more than 32,000.

Florida is currently in eighth place with nearly 6,000.

Throughout July, Florida has reportedly averaged more than 10,000 cases a day while California added 8,300 every 24 hours.

Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, has been widely criticised for his response to the pandemic.

On the other hand, New York has managed to get the virus under control after closing shops and restaurants while also enforcing face masks.

US President Donald Trump is also pushing to reopen schools in autumn despite concerns from parents and teachers.

For months, Mr Trump has called for the lifting of lockdown restrictions and tweeted governors should “liberate” states which adopted the state-at-home rules.

However, this week, he said his administration was “imploring young Americans to avoid packed bars” and urged them not to go to establishments open by state rues.

His comments came after it was revealed. Mr Trump was nine points behind presidential rival Joe Biden in the polls ahead of the November election.

He even called off a Republican rally in Florida as cases peaked.

Mr Trump said during a press briefing: “The timing for this event is not right.

“It’s just not right with what’s happened recently, the flare-up in Florida.

“To have a big convention, it’s not the right time. I have to protect the American people.”
