Donald Trump regret: US President admits second thoughts on controversial tweets

The US President said he sometimes wished he had waited before sharing his views on social media and compared it to writing angry letters but then not posting them. In an interview with David Portnoy, founder of sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports, Mr Trump was asked if he ever posted a tweet and then thought: “Oh man, I wish I didn’t send that one out”.

The President replied: “Often. Too often. You know it used to be in the old days before this you’d write a letter and you’d say ‘this letter’s really bad’.

“You’d put it on your desk and then you go back tomorrow and you say, ‘Oh, I’m glad I didn’t send it’. Right?

“But we don’t do that with Twitter, right? We put it out instantaneously, we feel great. And then you start getting phone calls. ‘Did you really say this?’

“I say, ‘What’s wrong with that?’. And you find a lot of things. You know what I find? It’s not the tweets, it’s the retweets that get you in trouble.”

Mr Trump has said he likes Twitter because it allows him to get his message out unfiltered and the platform is his preferred method of communication.

The US President said he writes many of the tweets himself but sometimes White House aides pre-plan social media messages.

The Republican’s tweets have caused countless controversies since he took office three-and-a-half years ago, sparking outrage among foreign leaders and triggering fierce criticism on his choice of language.

In his one of latest tweets Mr Trump launched a scathing attack on his predecessor Barack Obama.

He tweeted: “So Obama and his team of lowlifes spied on my campaign, and got caught – Open and shut case!

“More papers released today which are devastating to them. Will they ever pay the price? The political Crime of the Century!”

Earlier this week he enraged Beijing by referring to coronavirus as the China Virus on twitter.

He said: “We are United in our effort to defeat the Invisible China Virus, and many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance.

“There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favourite President!”

Last month he was forced to delete a retweet of a supporter shouting “White Power” at one of his election rallies.

In the past he has insulted some world leaders with extraordinary outbursts on social media.

And he also got into hot water after re-tweeting posts by rightwing commentator Katie Hopkins who has since had her account permanently suspended by the platform.
