McDonald's menu hacks: 10 ways to save money on your McDonald's

McDonald’s are reopening 700 restaurants for dining in today, after months of closure and then food for takeaway or delivery only. Customers will be able to order through table service and sit in to eat for the first time since March.

Anyone who does decide to dine in will have to leave their contact details in order to follow Government guidelines.

Customers will be able to fill out their contact details using through their phones, or cab scan a QR code in the restaurant to take them to the webpage directly.

There will be social distancing measures in place in restaurants, as well as hand sanitising stations, one way systems and floor markers for queueing.

You can check if your restaurant is one of the ones opening for dining in here.

10 ways to save money on your McDonald’s

1. Dine-in on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays in August

As part of the Government’s plan to get the economy back on track, participating restaurants will be offering 50 percent off meals up to £10 in August.

McDonald’s has confirmed it is participating, and so on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout August, you can get discounted food and drink.

This is for any customer dining in, and would, for example, mean a medium Big Mac meal instead of costing £4.89 would cost £2.45.

2. Save on McChicken Sandwich by choosing a Mayo Chicken instead

If you’re craving a chicken burger, don’t order the £3.19 McChicken Sandwich, instead, opt for the 99p Mayo Chicken.

They both include lettuce, mayonnaise, and battered chicken, so you’re not missing out.

3. Instead of choosing a £3.19 Big Mac, save £1.10 and create your own version

To do it, order a Double Cheeseburger for £1.59, and add the following free extras to have the ingredients of a Big Mac:

  • ‘extra’ onions
  • pickles,
  • shredded lettuce

Since February this year, you can now get Big Mac special sauce for 50p.

If you add the sauce the total cost will come to £2.09, more than a £1 saving.

4. Avoid the sugar tax

On fizzy drinks there is a sugar tax, but this only applies to one drink at McDonald’s.

If you choose original Coca-Cola (not Diet or Zero), it’ll cost you an extra 8p for a small, 12p more for medium or 14p more for a large.

You can avoid the tax by ordering any other drink off the menu.

5. Say no to ice in your drink

If you want more for your money, say no to having ice in your fizzy drink.

No ice means more room for a drink, and this can work across different restaurants, not just McDonald’s.

6. Get Free toppings

If you use the self-order screens or the McDonald’s app, you can add extra ketchup, mustard, onion, pickles, mayonnaise and/or shredded lettuce for free to any burger.

Should your burger already have one of those ingredients, you get double the amount, or if it’s not normally in there – it’s added in for you.

You can also pay 20p for extra cheese or 40p for bacon.

7. Use the hot drink loyalty scheme

All McDonald’s hot drinks come with a loyalty card and sticker, so you can build up the card as you buy hot drinks.

When you get to six, you get a free hot drink, be it tea, or any coffee.

8. Double your free hot drinks

As well as collecting physical drinks stickers, you can also collect virtual stickers in the form of points on the official McDonald’s app.

This works the same way, in that you get a virtual sticker for each drink you buy – but when collecting your coffee you’ll still get the actual sticker on your cup.

So if you buy six coffees, you’ll be able to claim two free ones back with the app and the physical stickers.

9. If you’re a student, bag yourself a free burger or McFlurry

With a valid student can, you can claim one of the following when you visit McDonalds:

Cheeseburger
Mayo Chicken
McFlurry

However, you need to purchase an Extra Value Meal from the menu and show your student ID at the till when you order.

And best be quick as this is only available until Monday, August 31.

10. Big Mac and fries for just £1.99

On McDonald’s receipts there are codes named “Food for Thought” this asks for your feedback on your meal while giving you a discount code in return.

If you head to the website on the receipt and fill in the survey you can get a code for £1.99 Big Mac and fries.

You can use your receipt from this new purchase to fill in the survey again and repeat the process.
