Face mask policy: Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi share important message on face coverings

Face masks will be mandatory in shops and supermarkets from July 24. Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury’s have shared updates on wearing face coverings in stores.

During the coronavirus pandemic, many shops and retailers have started to stock face masks.

While wearing a covering is not mandatory for all public outings, Britons have been encouraged to wear them in crowded places.

New rules from the government state that all shoppers in England will need to wear a face covering from July 24.

In Scotland, wearing masks in stores has been a requirement since July 10.

While some Britons could be fined for ignoring the new policy, others are exempt from the rule.

Face coverings are not required in England for children under the age of 11 or those with disabilities or breathing issues.

Retailers will be able to refuse entry to those who do not have a covering.

Some supermarkets have shared details on what will happen for those who forget.

DON’T MISS

Tesco

Tesco customers will be required to wear a face covering when they enter stores from Friday.

There will be signs placed at the front of the store to give customers a reminder.

Face masks packs will be available at the front of stores for those who have not brought a mask, Tesco has said.

The packs can be opened before entering the store and customers will purchase them later.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has said it will not “challenge” customers not wearing a mask when the rules come into place.

While it is a legal requirement, the retailer will trust customers to wear one if they can.

On Twitter, Sainsbury’s was asked if they would be challenging those who do not wear a mask from Friday.

The post read: “We won’t be challenging customers without a mask when they enter or when they are in store since they may have a reason not to wear a mask.”

Aldi

The discount supermarket chain will encourage shoppers to wear a mask, but urged them to be aware of those with a hidden disability.

A statement from Aldi said: “Last week, the Government announced that face coverings will be compulsory in shops in England from July 24 and, for that reason, you will need to wear a face covering to enter one of our stores from this date.

“To those vulnerable customers, please rest assured that the measures we have introduced to give you safe access to affordable food, such as early opening times from Monday to Saturday, will continue and our home delivery grocery parcels are still available to purchase.”
