  • De Gea endured a miserable time in United’s FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea
  • Shearer feels Dean Henderson, who has impressed on loan, should replace him

Alan Shearer believes that it is time for Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

De Gea endured another error-strewn displayed as United were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley, with the Spaniard especially at fault for the Blues’ second goal when he failed to deal with a hopeful effort from Mason Mount.

Henderson has impressed during his two-year loan spell at Sheffield United, and Shearer feels that the 23-year-old is ready to make an impact at Old Trafford.

Speaking on BBC One, Shearer said: ‘I think it’s time (to drop him). It keeps happening.

‘I think you bring Henderson back when you think he’s going to be number one. He has to bring him back as number one otherwise keep him out on loan for experience, but, has that time come? Yes, I think it has.’

During the defeat against Chelsea de Gea also came in for criticism for his role in Chelsea’s opener when he was beaten by a flick from Olivier Giroud.

De Gea still has just under three years remaining on his contract at United after signing a new bumper deal at the start of the season, but he has struggled for form and made several notable mistakes this term.

Sheffield United are hopeful of re-signing Henderson on loan for another year but it is not yet clear if boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will decided to bring him back to compete with de Gea for the No 1 shirt.

United boss Solskjaer admitted de Gea should have saved Mount’s shot for Chelsea’s second after the game.

Speaking to BBC, Solskjaer said: ‘He knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100 but that’s football for you. I made the decision to play him and mentally he was ready for it.’
