Miriam Margolyes blasts 'selfish' people for refusing face masks: 'It protects others!'

The Call the Midwife star appeared via video link on today’s episode of The One Show as social distancing guidelines remain in place across the UK. Another rule soon to be implemented in the ongoing governement strategy against the spread of coronavirus is mandatory face coverings in shops and on public transport, and it was a hot topic for discussion between BBC presenters Alex and Gethin when they spoke to Miriam.

Moments before Miriam appeared on-screen, The One Show viewers witnessed reporter Matt Allwright take to the streets of London to see how the public felt about wearing face masks.

Gethin welcomed the segment by stating: “But first, this week England followed Scotland in announcing fines for refusing ot wear face coverings in shops and masks will be mandatory on public transport across the whole of the UK by August,”

Alex then weighed in: “But lots of people don’t like wearing them, but there’s also people who can’t wear them for valid reasons.”

The two then cut to Matt’s report, in which he received a rather mixed bag of responses from those on the street.

She cotninued: “I think people should wear masks because it protects other people.

“It’s very selfish if you dont!” she concluded.

Moments after, Gethin quickly moved the conversation onto an upcoming play Miriam has been working on as she spends time indoors during lockdown.

However, those watching at home were left slightly divided by Miriam’s comments, taking to Twitter to air their views.

“Both of these can be done through the use of face coverings,” the Health Secretary added.

Those who don’t comply with the new rules could face fines of up to £100 from July 24.

Mr Hancock went on to mention: “Sadly, sales assistants, cashiers and security guards have suffered disproportionately in this crisis.

“The death rate of sales and retail assistants is 75 percent higher amongst men and 60 percent higher amongst women than in the general population.”

The One Show continues weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
