Virgil van Dijk brutally trolled for Liverpool howler and compared to Man Utd star Maguire

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been slammed on social media for his error which led to Arsenal’s equaliser against the Premier League champion. The Dutch centre-back gave the ball away to Alexandre Lacazette who coverted and Van Dijk has been compared to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Liverpool took the lead through Sadio Mane after fine work and a perfect low cross from Andy Robertson.

It looked easy for the Reds in the early going but Arsenal hit back through Lacazette after the error from Van Dijk.

And it got even better for the Gunners as Reiss Nelson gave Mikel Arteta’s side the lead on the stroke of half-time.

It was safe to say social media enjoyed Van Dijk making a rare error though.

One simply tweeted: “Maguire > Van Dijk”.

Another exclaimed: “Van dijk going full Harry maguire there”.

Matthew Upson couldn’t believe what he saw from Van Dijk while commentating for the BBC either.

He said: “It’s a howler from Van Dijk, no other way to describe it. He was just not ready for the ball.”

Graeme Souness also commented on the error from Van Dijk as well as one from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson for Arsenal’s second goal.

He said: “Then Alisson is at it as well. This is not Liverpool.

“You asked me what Liverpool would turn up before the game and I said I didn’t know.

“You cannot explain why you just drop of the pace, I’ve been there before and you cannot explain it.

“We’ve never seen Van Dijk make a mistake remotely like that in two years.

“Liverpool are in their armchair, not from the first minute to the last, but there are moments where they are drifting.”
