'Van Dijk turning to David Luiz at the Emirates': Twitter reacts to Liverpool star's gaffe

‘Van Dijk and Alisson turning to David Luiz and Ospina at the Emirates’: Twitter sees the funny side of Liverpool’s rare defensive gaffes that gifted Arsenal two first-half goals

Twitter saw the funny side as Liverpool’s back line turned into an Arsenal tribute act at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson both made uncharacteristic errors as the Premier League champions surrendered a one-goal lead to lose their second game of the restart.

Sadio Mane had given Liverpool a deserved lead early on before two defensive gaffes saw the hosts claim all three points in north London.

Van Dijk, under pressure from Reiss Nelson, passed the ball straight to Alexandre Lacazette, who took it round Alisson to slot home into an empty net to make it 1-1.

Goalkeeper Alisson then mistimed a ball straight to an Arsenal player, allowing Nelson to slot home on the stroke of half-time for 2-1.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were unable to muster a response after half-time and slumped to their third defeat of the season.

It means they can no longer break the Premier League points record of 100, set by Manchester City two years ago.

Liverpool’s two most reliable backline players giving away goals drew predictably amusing responses on social media, particularly given their opponents.

One user tweeted: ‘At the end of this game van Dijk takes off his mask to reveal Kolasniac [sic].’

Another added: ‘Van Dijk and Alisson turning to David Luiz and Ospina at the Emirates. Lmao.’

One tweeter was bemused by van Dijk’s attempt at deflecting blame, as he tried to appeal for a foul against him by Nelson.

They wrote: ‘Van Dijk was really looking for someone to blame, pony tail’s too tight he’s had a mare!’

Joey Barton, though, reflected on how rare the mistakes were from the backbone of the Premier League champions.

He tweeted: ‘Good to see that van Dijk and Alisson aren’t robots… Still the world’s most outstanding players in their respective position.’
