Rick and Morty theory: Did Rick create the multiverse? Here's the evidence

Rick and Morty is an adult cartoon like no other, blending both crude jokes and well thought out scientific plots to get its viewers thinking. The Adult Swim series returned for a fourth season in 2019 and came to an end earlier this year. Rick and Morty will return though for its fifth series where the grandfather and grandson duo are bound to get up to more mayhem.

Did Rick create the multiverse?

Fans have been desperate to know Rick’s backstory since the very beginning.

Exactly what happened to him in those 20 years and how did he manage to make inter-dimensional travel possible.

One Reddit user believes they have got the answer to the latter at least, stating how Rick was actually the creator of the multiverse.

The fan explains several points to back up this bizarre theory which may answer many questions.

First of all, the user Snakeravencat refers to season two’s Rick: Creator of Worlds.

To save his family, Rick gives himself up to the Galactic Federation and when asked why he was in there by a fellow criminal, Rick replied: “Everything”.

This was the initial clue which made Snakeravencat believe Rick was the one who created the multiverse.

“What if this isn’t the offhanded dismissal, but rather a summary?

“What if he actually feels responsible for EVERYTHING because he started it?”

In season three’s The Rickshank Redemption, Rick provided the federation with a fake memory which showed his wife Diane dying in a bomb explosion.

While Rick did say this wasn’t a real memory of his, there is a possibility this could have happened and Diane is actually dead as she has never been in the series and is hardly mentioned.

This would continue to back up this Reddit fan’s theory of Rick creating the multiverse as a way of trying to get back his beloved wife.

Snakeravencat continued: “Is there anything Rick would not be both willing and able to do to get her back? No. Nothing.

“He takes to the garage. One thought in mind. I have to get her back.

“He takes to the garage, and begins working towards functioning time travel. “He starts with modified temporal fields, hoping to change the direction of time on a local scale.

“No such luck, he can only slow or stop time’s flow.

“So, he wonders: “What if I could stack the fields inside each other?”

Snakeravencat then talks about a particular method where Rick posits the use of a spatially tesselated void which would then allow him to place multiple fields in a single place.

This method was used in season two’s The Rick’s Must Be Crazy when he created the microverse battery.

The user said: “However, without any bounding, the effect grows, exaggerates, and shatters reality into an infinite number of possibilities.

“Having realized what he’s done, he has his one last regret, and shelves his time travel stuff. (Literally).

“Doesn’t matter. There are an infinite number of universes to access now. Somewhere she’s out there. In one of those universes she survived. Except that she’s not.”
