Anonymous White House officials unload on Dr. Anthony Fauci

Amid an ongoing spike in U.S. coronavirus cases and deaths, the White House has compiled information on the times when Dr. Anthony Fauci has erred.

An unnamed White House officials has assembled a list of statements by Fauci that have not held up and distributed it to members of the media. President Trump said last week Fauci has made ‘a lot of mistakes.’

A longtime advisor to former Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday called it a ‘smear.’

And a member of the coronavirus task force, Admiral Brett Giroir, who heads testing efforts, said Sunday Fauci is not ‘100 per cent right.’

“I respect Dr. Fauci a lot, but Dr. Fauci is not 100 percent right, and he also doesn’t necessarily, he admits that, have the whole national interest in mind,” Giroir told NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’

Giroir added: “He looks at it from a very narrow public health point of view.”

An unnamed official told NBC News: ‘Several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things,’ NBC News reported. An official also provided the opposition research material to the Washington Post.

The list includes statements early in the pandemic, including when Fauci said the coronavirus was ‘not a major threat.’

He also inaccurately said the disease was ‘not driven by asymptomatic carriers,’ which was the view expressed by other experts at the time.

Notably, Fauci said in March people ‘should not be walking around with masks.’ He has now flipped on that guidance, although at the time there was an acute shortage of personal protective equipment at hospitals, and officials were seeking to preserve it.

Fauci, 79, heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is trusted by two-thirds of the country, according to a New York Times / Sienna poll. The survey found just 26 per cent of the public trusted Trump.

The push at Fauci comes after weeks when it has often been President Trump who is under fire for statements about the coronavirus. Trump has said the virus will ‘disappear,’ predicated it would dissipate in April with warm weather, said numbers were coming ‘way down,’ and said in March that anybody that needs a test gets a test, at a time when there were shortages.

Former Joe Biden chief of staff Ron Klain blasted what he called an effort by the White House to ‘smear’ Fauci.

‘From a WH that has done many despicable things, smearing Tony Fauci is one of the worst. He has served six Presidents and saved countless lives,’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘If a President could have just ONE advisor to help him navigate a health crisis, Tony would be my pick.’

Fauci has also said in interviews that states’ decision to reopen too soon likely continued to the recent spike.

‘”There are some times when despite the guidelines and the recommendations to open up carefully and prudently, some states skipped over those and just opened up too quickly,” he told CNN last week.
