Matt Baker: Countryfile host speaks out on claims about his reputation ‘I don’t think so’

Matt Baker, 42, has denied claims about his “wholesome reputation” after becoming a fan favourite on shows including Countryfile and The One Show. The presenter was quizzed on how viewers perceive him during a recently unearthed interview with iNews from 2017.

When the interviewer suggested Matt “has gained a reputation, over the years, as Mr Wholesome” during their conversation, he humbly insisted “I just am what I am” in response.

The star questioned: “I’m Mr Wholesome, am I? I don’t think so. I just am what I am.”

However, when asked about the “naughtiest thing he’s ever done”, Matt couldn’t resist making a cheeky joke about former Prime Minister Theresa May’s response to that exact question.

The farmer humorously quipped: “Oh, I don’t know. It’s hard not to run through a wheat field where I’m from.”

Matt also opened up about his decision to return to the countryside after his short-lived experience moving to London in his early twenties.

The television personality tried living in the capital city when he was offered his first presenting role on Blue Peter.

However, he quickly found himself yearning to be back amongst nature.

Matt, who is currently living with his wife Nicola Baker and their two children Molly and Luke on their farm in Hertfordshire, admitted he only “lasted a matter of weeks” in London.

“I don’t like to be pushed along. I like nature to set my tempo.”

Elsewhere, Matt impressed fans with a risky move from his background in gymnastics, as the presenter showed off his skills in an Instagram video.

The multi-talented star told his 210,000 Instagram followers “don’t try this at home” as he filmed himself attempting the tricky balancing act.

Before jumping up onto the roof of his jeep to perform the stunt, Matt explained in a video: “It’s international handstand day, so here comes my offering.

“This could go badly wrong,” he admitted while shooting a cheeky smile at the camera.

The Gap Band’s track Oops Upside Your Head could be heard playing in the background while Matt did a handstand outside his house.

During the stunt, he breathlessly exclaimed: “Don’t try this at home!”

He then returned to a standing position and proudly shouted: “I’m still alive!”

Matt captioned the clip: “It’s international handstand day one of my favourite days of the year.”

Countryfile airs tonight at 7pm on BBC One.
