Tom Hanks recalls doctor's words about COVID-19 diagnosis with wife Rita: 'No guarantee'

Greyhound star Tom Hanks, 64, has said that he and his wife, Rita Wilson, 63, didn’t fully understand the seriousness of COVID-19 when the doctors told them they had to be “careful” after being diagnosed with coronavirus in March. The Castaway actor was away with his spouse while filming for Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis Presley biopic film in Australia.

It comes after the Hollywood legend recalled the doctor’s words when they were diagnosed with the virus, in a new interview with The Daily Telegraph.

Tom admitted: “When we were told we were found positive, we thought, ‘What? What did we win?’

“Then you’re given the facts.”

He continued to explain that the doctors had to explain to them how dangerous COVID-19 was.

Tom went on to say: “We were told, ‘Here’s the reason why you have got to be careful; here’s the reason why it’s very important that you do your part.'”

Once Tom and Rita were told they tested positive, they remained in hospital to quarantine for three days before returning to their home on the Gold Coast to continue their isolation period.

The actor said: “I was the canary in the coal mine for some of this, for sure.

“But now we are once again at the place where there is no guarantee of immunity, from the information that I’ve read.”

The Oscar-winning star wrote to his 9.6 million Instagram followers four months ago: “Hello, folks. @ritawilson and I are down here in Australia.

“We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches.

“Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” he confirmed.

“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed.”
