Chelsea stepping up Kai Havertz transfer interest because one star set to leave

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wants to sign Kai Havertz this summer because of two key reasons, according to transfer expert Ian McGarry. Bayer Leverkusen have slapped a £90million price tag on the midfielder’s head.

Chelsea have had several issues with their defence this season and Burnley are the only side in the top 10 to have conceded more goals.

The need for a new centre-half and left-back has been highlighted and the west Londoners are pressing ahead in their hunt for defensive reinforcements.

But Lampard is keen on capturing Havertz, even though he has already signed attacking duo Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner from Ajax and RB Leipzig, respectively.

McGarry believes there are two reasons why the former midfielder is keen to link up with Havertz – with one being because of a potential departure.

“There is a strong interest from Chelsea in the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder,” McGarry told the Transfer Window podcast.

“The reason for that is… people will think Chelsea are well-stocked in midfield… it’s two-fold.

“Lampard expects and is preparing for Jorginho to leave this summer. The possible destinations are Juventus and Inter Milan.

“If so Havertz would be a very good replacement.

“The second factor is Havertz has a very good eye for goal and Lampard being Chelsea’s all-time top scorer from midfield is something he appreciates more than most.

“I do not think there is a point to prove,” said Lampard. “He proves it in training and when he plays. Simply these things are selection. I just want to see the usual Jorginho.

“I keep getting asked about next season. It is to me irrelevant what happens next season. These final few games will define how we sit and look at this season and look forward to next.”
