Car crime reaches highest level in four years in major safety risk to all road users

Car theft offences have dramatically soared to more than 150,000 between 2018 and 2019. It marks an increase of up to 55,000 cases since four years ago, according to analysis from RAC Insurance. The RAC says almost all police forces which responded to a Freedom of Information Act request have seen a rise in offences over the past four years.

He said: “These figures paint a rather disturbing picture – vehicle thefts are on the rise almost everywhere, and in some parts of the country numbers are rocketing.

“It’s also not the case that the rises in crime are confined to a few larger urban areas, with many police forces covering more rural areas also seeing big increases.”

Mr Williams claims some of the increase can be blamed on the lack of immobiliers on some motor bikes or mopeds.

These are electronic security services which prevents an engine running unless the correct key is being used.

“Three of the biggest factors that determine whether a car is stolen or not come down to how it’s secured, where it’s kept and the time of day.

“Criminals appear to prefer stealing vehicles at night, with those parked at owners’ homes, presumably where there is easier access to a key, also being favoured.

“While organised criminal gangs are responsible for a large proportion of crime, thieves will also be opportunistic in nature so the more a driver can do to make their car a less likely target the better.

“It’s also critical motorists buy quality motor insurance policies that will cover them in case the worst happens.”

To prevent drivers being caught out, RAC Insurance has urged drivers to double check their car is locked before leaving it.

They also urge drivers to find the right place to park such as in a well-lit area that’s open to public view. Car parks with the ParkMark logo have been praised for meeting certain safety standards.

The company also urged road users to consider security when they are buying their next road car.

RAC Insurance says drivers should ideally look for vehicles with an immobiliser in place and check Thatcham’s Consumer Security Ratings before purchasing a car.
