Roy Keane says Tottenham are average without Harry Kane and Paul Pogba doesn't want to be a leader

Roy Keane was on Sky Sports punditry duties for the two live games on the channel on Thursday evening, and he only enhanced his reputation as a forthright assessor of on the field actions.

The former Manchester United midfielder saw his old side beat Aston Villa 3-0, and while praising goalscorer Mason Greenwood he criticised Greenwood’s fellow goalscorer Paul Pogba for only wanting to be a leader off the pitch.

Keane also tore into Tottenham after their disappointing 0-0 draw at Bournemouth, and believes a lot needs to change at the club if they are to compete for European places.

Here, Sportsmail takes you through the best of his comments.

‘I think he’s lost the eye of the tiger’

Keane’s first victim of the evening was Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, who has struggled for consistency this season and netted just eight times in 28 league appearances as the Cherries have slipped into the drop zone.

The 28-year-old – who had an overhead kick against Tottenham in their 0-0 draw ruled out by VAR – was linked with moves to Manchester United and Chelsea after being called up by Gareth Southgate and scoring 14 goals in the Premier League.

But Keane believes Wilson’s drop in form since then has come as a result of the forward losing his hunger, and warned rediscovering it will be the only way he will attract the interest of top clubs again.

‘The amount of goals, you think Bournemouth’s attacking, I remember looking at Wilson, thinking he’s the real deal, called up for England.

‘I think this kid’s lost his hunger. He’s been rewarded at Bournemouth, big wages, I think he’s lost the eye of the tiger. They have to stay in the race, create some sort of performance.

‘Get something, stay in the race, last few games they’ve been beaten after 10-15 minutes. Bit more hunger, bit more desire, but there is quality in that team.’

‘His team have been shocking’

At half-time of Tottenham’s dull 0-0 draw at relegation-threatened Bournemouth, the former Manchester United midfielder took aim at Jose Mourinho’s side.

The Portuguese was incensed on the touchline that his side had not been awarded an early penalty for a push on Harry Kane.

Despite agreeing that Spurs should have been awarded a spot kick, Keane claimed Mourinho’s issues ran far deeper after his side failed to register a shot on target in the first half and which carried on into the second.

‘I’m amazed with that decision. Mourinho has got bigger worries, his team has been shocking.

‘The only consolation is it can’t be any worse. This game is here for Bournemouth.

‘Spurs look like they’re on their holidays. I’d fully expect Mourinho to make some changes.

‘He has good options from the bench but the two players he has left out [Moura and Son] haven’t been playing that great.

‘Sometimes the manager has got to be ruthless which the manager is. He [Mourinho] has mentioned there that he has got four or five world class players.

‘Tottenham don’t, Tottenham are an average team. Take Kane out of that team and they are in huge trouble.’

‘They will constantly disappoint you, it’s in their DNA’

Things did not improve for Spurs in the second half after they followed up their defeat at Sheffield United with a disappointing draw at the Vitality Stadium.

They failed to register a shot on target, while Harry Kane did not have a touch in the opposition box until the 78th minute .

A point did little to further Spurs’ European ambitions, and Keane was merciless in his assessment of their current position in the table after their latest setback.

‘Tottenham were poor tonight. Bournemouth showed a bit more fight.

‘They went to Sheffield [United], didn’t show any fight, made changes at half time.

‘That’s in Tottenham’s DNA, they will constantly disappoint you. The table doesn’t lie, ninth, that’s where they deserve to be.’

‘You deserve everything you get’

Keane continued his tirades for the late game on Thursday evening, when Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-0.

After Bruno Fernandes’ controversial penalty had given United the lead, Mason Greenwood doubled their advantage just before half-time with a spectacular effort.

But Keane was furious with Villa defender Tyrone Mings’ role in the goal, hanging the centre-back out to dry as he raged at him for losing the ball before failing to close the space near Greenwood down.

‘I feel sorry for Villa, just on half time, study Mings here, he loses it, an experienced international player.

‘When you’ve got your central defenders not brave enough to go and close the ball. He’s gotta go two yards, he’s made the first mistake, and that’s why teams get relegated, when your experienced players don’t do the basics.

‘No sympathy for Aston Villa. Before the game I thought bit of energy, but when defenders defend like that you deserve everything you get.’

‘Pogba wants to be a leader on social media’

Paul Pogba has often been scolded for not assuming enough responsibility on the field during his time at Manchester United.

The Frenchman did net his first goal since April 2019 at Villa Park as the Red Devils became the first Premier League side in history to win four straight games by a three-goal margin.

But he did not escape further criticism of his leadership qualities, as Keane took a swipe at him and accused him of shying away from being a leader in the United dressing room and focusing too much on social media.

‘We’ve been saying the last year or two Pogba needs to take more of a lead with the team. I don’t think he wants to be a leader.

‘I think Pogba will enjoy Maguire coming in, showing different leadership skills, Fernandes as well on the pitch, Pogba likes that, he doesn’t want to be the main guy.

‘He wants to be the main guy on social media, but on the pitch he’s thinking ‘I’ll be glad of that, I’ll just be under the radar.’ He looks like he’s enjoying himself a bit more.’

‘Manchester United are starting to get exciting again’

Despite the brutally negative assessments Keane had made over the course of the evening, the Irishman did reserve some praise for his former side.

The 48-year-old believes United’s youngsters have brought the verve back to Old Trafford, and wished Greenwood all the best and urged the youngster to keep his hunger.

But Keane also warned there was still a long way for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to go before they could think about winning the Premier League again.

‘The best part of football is scoring a goal. Good luck to the kid, that’s what dreams are made of. Keep that hunger.’

‘United are starting to get exciting again. These type of kids are getting Man United back, scoring goals, plenty to do in terms of winning titles. But good luck to these kids.

‘Man United fans want to see good attacking young players, they’ll be buzzing tonight.’
