Pirates of the Caribbean 6 'Jack Sparrow to get nod if Johnny Depp controversies die down'

It’s been three years since Johnny Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow for the fifth time in Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (aka Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US). Since then the star’s future in the franchise has been uncertain following domestic abuse allegations by his ex-wife Amber Heard, which Depp strongly denies. The 57-year-old has been at London’s High Court this week where he is suing the publisher of The Sun newspaper over an article in which the actor is referred to as a “wife beater” – a piece The Sun has defended as being an accurate story.

Just last month Disney announced Pirates of the Caribbean 6 without Depp’s Jack Sparrow.

Instead, Margot Robbie is starring in a new story set elsewhere in the Pirates universe.

Depp’s fans have launched their fury in their droves on social media demanding Jack Sparrow be included.

Now a source has told The Hollywood Reporter that Pirates movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer “would like to at least nod to the popularity of the Captain Jack Sparrow character in the coming film if the controversies die down.”

The Hollywood star continued: “My view is if the studio isn’t worried then I’m not doing my job properly.

“Disney hated me. [They were] thinking of every way they could to get rid of me, to fire me. ‘Oh, we’re going to have to subtitle him.’ ‘We don’t understand Captain Jack Sparrow. What’s wrong with him?’ ‘What’s wrong with his arms?’ ‘Is he drunk?’ ‘Is he mentally f***ing stupefied?’ ‘Is he gay?’”

“I told them, ‘Look, you don’t like what I’m doing, fire me. You hired me to do a job and play the character and this is what I want to do.’

“This is the work. I mean, hadn’t they seen any of the work I’d done previously? You might want to take a look at that before you hire a motherf***er, you know?”

Depp added: “I knew I was right. Even the very first time when they came back to me saying, ‘No, no, what is this?’ it felt right.

“Even when the other actors were looking at me like I was an absolute menace, I stayed with it.”

In the end, Depp was Oscar-nominated for Best Actor after his debut as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

The star has been nominated in the category three times but is yet to win an Academy Award.
