Liverpool sweat over Jordan Henderson's fitness who is set for scan on knee injury

Liverpool sweat over Jordan Henderson fitness with captain set for scan on knee injury… as Jurgen Klopp admits he’ll ‘have to wait’ before seeing if he can feature in champions’ final four games

  • Jordan Henderson picked up a knee injury in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Brighton
  • The Liverpool captain left the pitch shaking his head following a collision
  • He will now undergo a scan in the next 24 hours to see the extent of the damage
  • Jurgen Klopp will wait on the scan results to see if Henderson can feature again

Jordan Henderson is set to miss Liverpool’s attempt to rewrite history after sustaining a knee injury in their 30th Premier League success of a remarkable season.

Liverpool’s captain, who scored the second goal in their 3-1 dismissal of Brighton, left the pitch shaking his head deep in the second half after he was involved in a collision. He flew back to Merseyside with his team-mates on Wednesday night but will undergo a scan in the next 24 hours.

Jurgen Klopp, Henderson’s worried manager, said he knew the damage ‘will not be nothing’ but added that Liverpool ‘will have to wait’ before determining whether he will be involved in their four remaining fixtures. The champions need nine points to record the greatest ever points total.

That quest will begin against Burnley on Saturday but Klopp insists the idea of pursuing the tally is not something he has contemplated.

‘When I think about the next four opponents I can’t think we will have another 12 points,’ said Klopp.

‘Burnley are a results machine, I have so much admiration for them, then we play Arsenal in a really good moment and Chelsea in a really good moment. How can I expect we get all these points?

‘When I think of 92 points I think how did we get 97 last season when we always had the Champions League in the middle?

‘You need luck of course, and we had that at Newcastle with Origi’s late goal, but you have to fight a lot. That is the mother and father of each win – you have to work hard for it.’

Klopp was certainly helped at the AMEX Stadium by the opening 10 minutes in which Brighton were, according to Graeme Souness on Sky, ‘naive’ for the style in which they attempted to play; manager Graham Potter insisted he should take the blame.

‘Liverpool smelt blood as we gave them a couple of goals,’ said Potter. ‘We put a lot into the game. We choose how we play and sometimes you have to accept how you might die. We have to improve – and that includes myself.’
