Piers Morgan has continued to echo support for ‘Good Morning Britain’ colleague Kate Garraway after her husband Derek Draper opened his eyes for the first time this weekend. He revealed that the former Labour spin doctor, who was put into a medically-induced coma 10 weeks ago had a “very slow and uncertain path” ahead but they hoped he would recover. The ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge is known to think the world of Kate and once joked that he wished he had asked her out.
Piers revealed his true feelings about co-star Kate in a column for Event magazine, when she was a contestant in ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ last year.
He claimed there was “no surprise” to see her being “such a trouper” because of her personality and talent.
The star wrote: “She’s always been a great laugh on and off camera, and more importantly, has always been able to laugh at herself.”
Piers continued to explain the cheeky joke he made about dating her after she announced her engagement to Derek Draper.
He claimed to have “locked horns” with the former Labour spin doctor under Peter Mandelson while he was the editor of the Daily Mirror.
Piers continued: “After Kate announced she was marrying her husband Derek Draper… I emailed her to say: ‘If I’d known the bar was that low, I’d have had a crack myself.’”
Kate revealed there were doubts about their compatibility from the get-go and often jokes were made about their ‘unlikely pairing’ and even his family couldn’t believe it.
Her husband quipped: “My relatives kept coming up and saying things like, ‘I can’t believe your daughter’s married our fat f***er Derek’.”
Kate recalled that an ITV colleague first suggested they could be a good couple over drinks but apparently “pitched… the old Derek” to her.
She claimed GMTV’s Gloria De Piero told her he was “amazing” and “practically ran the Groucho Club… and Soho House” in London.
But Kate found out otherwise when she met him, she said: “When I met him he wasn’t anything like that at all.

“I liked him straight away, he was funny and clever. But I thought he seemed rather sad.”
Despite the questions about their relationship, the pair tied the knot in 2005 and remained happily married with their two children Darcey and William.
During Derek’s battle with coronavirus, Kate claimed that the 10 weeks since he had been put into a medically-induced coma felt more like 10 years, during an interview on ‘Good Morning Britain’.
The star told viewers how “grateful” she was that her husband was alive but that the “evil virus” had ravaged him from the “top of his head to the tips of his toes”.
She claimed one doctor told her that Derek was the “worst-affected person that he’s had to treat, who has lived” – it’s expected he may need to relearn how to walk and talk.
Kate added: “This is a war Derek is fighting and tens of thousands of others… It’s an absolute miracle that he’s here.
“I keep saying I know I’ve had a miracle but if I could just have one more, and he could just make that next step – I know I’m pushing my luck.”
