However, in time, it becomes clear these women need the choir as their refuge while they struggle with the reality of being the wives of servicepeople.
In the movie, the real heartwrenching moments come with the rest of the choir, however, as they face that reality head-on and try to support one another through some horrifically difficult times.
Emma Lowndes’ Annie is a fantastically fun character, naysaying and nervous throughout the choir’s meteoric rise to the Royal Albert Hall, while Laura Checkley’s Maz is the young women who had no idea of her talent until the choir.
At the heart is the relationships between the women, as they become like a family with their bickering and moaning, but also their genuine affection and connection through the joint experience of who they are.
