Mason Greenwood will oust Marcus Rashford out of Manchester United XI, believes Glenn Hoddle

‘I think he will push Marcus Rashford out of the team’: Mason Greenwood will oust team-mate out of Man United XI if they sign another striker as he’s a ‘far better clinical finisher’, believes Glenn Hoddle

  • Mason Greenwood is excelling in his first full season in professional football
  • The 18-year-old has 15 goals in all competitions for Manchester United this term
  • By comparison, his United team-mate Marcus Rashford has 20 goals this season

Marcus Rashford will find himself out of Manchester United’s starting XI if they sign a striker due to the talent of Mason Greenwood.

That’s the view of former England manager Glenn Hoddle who believes Greenwood is a ‘far better clinical finisher’ and therefore has the edge.

Greenwood continues to impress in his first full season in professional football with his sublime brace against Bournemouth on Saturday taking his goal tally to 15 in all competitions this term.

Rashford was also on target during that 5-2 win – scoring from the penalty spot to take his tally to 20 in all competitions this campaign. The 22-year-old has missed a large chunk of the season due to a back injury.

Rashford and Greenwood are dovetailing brilliantly on the wings of a front three with Anthony Martial spearheading the attack.

Despite their devastating form, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains determined to bolster his attacking options with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho a top target.

However, Hoddle believes that if the club do add a striker then it is Rashford of the current three who will miss out due to the precocious talent of Greenwood.

‘I think he’s [Greenwood] a wonderful player now and he’s only going to get better and better,’ Hoddle told Premier League Productions.

‘I’m really impressed with the two feet. I love to see players play with two feet. He’s got a right foot and he’s got a left foot. I think Phil [Neville] is right about playing him right in a wide berth. Will he end up down the middle? Maybe, maybe not.

‘I think he will push Marcus Rashford out of the team. There’s a quote. I think he will end up being a far better clinical finisher and in the end I think you’re going to have to put this lad in first ahead of anyone else.

‘Their front three at the moment is working really well for them, [But] When you look at Martial [and Rashford] they’re all wingers really; they want to play wide.

‘So if they did go and get a centre forward, I think he could play round a real main focal centre forward and have him playing round there. Wow! He could be anything with the two feet.’
