Chris Evans speaks out on criticism: ‘I never got why people got sniffy about it'

“I thought it was so cool!”

While the former BBC DJ never mentioned who he was talking about, we can probably assume he meant the critics who branded the adaptation “forced” and “unnecessary”.

The film begins in 1927, shortly before a royal visit to Downton Abbey by King George V and Queen Mary.

It features many of the original cast members such as Laura, Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery and Elizabeth McGovern.

BBC journalist and critic Caryn James, gave the film three stars and described it as “delightful fun” despite the plot being “obvious almost to the point of stupidity”.
