California active shooter alert: Reports of gunman at Marine Corps base

Several reports have emerged on social media of an “active shooter” at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in California. The base also known as 29 Palms, is the largest US Marine Corps base.

An alert message sent to employees read: “Please shelter in place until notified.

“Code White: There is an Active Shooter in the A M C C. Remain calm.

“Silence your cell phone. Run, hide, fight. Help is on the way.”

A video of another urgent alert message has also been shared, the audio warned  “you are at serious risk” and to urged people to “lock and barricade the door.”

Several concerned residents took to Twitter, one user wrote: “Active shooter on US Marine Base 29 palms CA.”

Another user said: “Supposedly there’s an active shooter on 29 Palm.”

A third said: “Active shooter on the base in 29 Palms. We are locked down here with the kids.”

Southern California news channel KESQ reports the incident took place at around 6.30am local time and a suspect is in custody.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Angela Chen from KESQ wrote on Twitter: “BREAKING: a shooting suspect is now in custody at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base.

“A base spokesperson confirmed active shooter situation started around 6:30 this morning.

“Officials are speaking with the suspect now. No word on injuries or victims at this point.”
