Antiques Roadshow taken off air in BBC schedule shake-up – here’s why

Antiques Roadshow has become a pinnacle of Sunday night television, taking the primetime slot on the broadcaster at 8pm. Host Fiona Bruce, 56, is usually on hand to oversee proceedings from various locations up and down the country. However, with the coronavirus pandemic putting a halt on sporting events earlier this year, the football season has been able to resume over the last couple of weeks. As such, one game will be shown on BBC One this evening, taking over the entire slot for the popular programme.

Although Liverpool have already been crowned the champions of the Premier League this year, football fans are still able to watch some of the other games which should have taken place earlier this year.

This evening, Southampton will take on Manchester City at their home ground of St Mary’s Stadium, with kick-off scheduled to start at 7pm.

Gary Lineker, 59, will be on hand to host the Match of the Day coverage, which will begin slightly earlier at 6:35pm.

Once the game gets underway and excluding the potential for overtime, the match should conclude at 9pm before new drama The Luminaries begins.

Therefore, there is no chance for the hit Sunday night show to air on the broadcaster’s schedule tonight, but fans needn’t fear as the programme will return to screens very soon.

In fact, with filming put on hold due to the nationwide lockdown implemented by the British Government at the end of March, production is soon to resume on Antiques Roadshow.

The set up may be a little different than viewers are used to, with visitors, guests and experts adhering to social distancing guidelines.

A statement on the show’s official website reads: “We’re unlikely to be able to film on the scale we are used to, but we are exploring the option of inviting a small number of guests with items, and our experts to future Roadshows.

“To make this work we really need to know in advance about the items you were planning to bring along,” it concluded.

Speaking with Dluxe Magazine last year, host Fiona explained why the show is still as popular as ever, even after being on the air since 1979.

Having presented the programme for the past 12 years, the newscaster said: “I think it’s amazing that the Antiques Roadshow is essentially the same as it has been for 42 years and it’s still hugely popular.

“What makes it eternally popular is probably what I love about it – that we all hope that we could have something gathering dust on the mantelpiece or in the attic that either turns out to be very valuable or has an amazing story.

“It happens week-in, week-out and you’d think that the well would begin to run dry and it hasn’t,” she continued.

The host added: “We still find amazing things every week. You can never predict what will turn up once a visitor brings along a vanity set that had been on Donald Trump’s yacht.

“It was as tasteful and restrained as you might expect – that’s to say it was fabulously bling,” Fiona said.

Discussing future plans for the show, the presenter admitted she would love to venture overseas and see what New Zealand has to offer.

Asked if there is still legroom for the programme to fill the primetime slot on the BBC, she explained of her hopes: “That it continues to be as popular as it is now, continues to find extraordinary items and continues to have a place in people’s hearts.”
