Two-time London Marathon winner Wilson Kipsang hit with FOUR-YEAR ban for anti-doping violations.

Two-time London Marathon winner Wilson Kipsang hit with FOUR-YEAR ban for anti-doping violations… and he claimed that he missed a test as he was caught in traffic due to a lorry crash – even though it happened three months later!

  • Wilson Kipsang had four whereabouts failures between April 2018 and May 2019
  • Three missed tests or filing failures in a 12-month period triggers a charge
  • He was ruled to have tampered with the investigation by giving false evidence

Two-time London Marathon champion Wilson Kipsang has been banned for four years for anti-doping violations – including the submission of a phony picture of a lorry crash to explain a missed test.

The 38-year-old, who also won an Olympic bronze medal at London 2012, had four whereabouts failures between April 2018 and May 2019. Three missed tests or filing failures in a 12-month period triggers a charge.

In a further finding, Kipsang was ruled to have tampered with the investigation by providing false evidence. He claimed he had missed a test on May 17, 2019 because he was caught in traffic behind an overturned lorry, but the picture of the crash that he handed in for evidence was in fact taken three months later in August.

His conviction continues a startling trend with 56 Kenyan athletes currently serving a suspension for an anti-doping violation. His management, Volare Sports, are considering an appeal via the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In a statement, they said: ‘Volare Sports and Wilson strongly believe in a clean sport and support anti-doping measures. We emphasise that there is no case of use of doping. No prohibited substance was ever found.

‘The accusation regarding alleged/attempted tampering (article 2.5) concerned an explanation that was given in the results management process regarding a possible Whereabouts Failure and did not concern tampering with a doping test itself.

‘The decision is not final and conclusive yet. Wilson has the opportunity to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). We will study and analyse the decision of the Disciplinary Tribunal and consider the further legal steps. Pending this process we will not communicate anything more about it.’
